Prickly Pear Cactus

Opuntia humifusa (Raf.) Rafinesque

"The fleshy, flattened segments of the prostrate green stems of this cactus are usually tightly jointed and not easily broken apart. The flowers, 5-7 cm in diameter, produce reddish, pulpy, obovoid fruits 2-3 cm long. (The stem segments of O. triacantha and O. cubensis, both restricted to the Keys, separate easily. A frequent perennial of sandy clearings, roadsides, and pinelands throughout the state, and on to Louisiana and the Carolinas" (Bell & Taylor, 1982, p. 136).
