"Ancient Wanderers," a Poem for Treasure Hill by Jelle Roos

Ancient Wanderers
by Jelle Roos

Ancient wanderers, hear me!
You who hunted and planted this land,
You the two-leggeds who lived with the four-leggeds and standing ones,
Whose bones and blood now enrich this soil,
New wanderers come to live beneath these oaks and pines.

Old-time settlers, listen!
You who claimed this land,
Who logged it, farmed it, and sold it to satisfy your desires--
Let go your claims.

Now, this land is mine!
My hopes planted in this soil will blossom into happiness,
And all my works will result in peace.
